Abstract

The ordeal novel was able to portray the Algerian reality and the prevailing miserable conditions and the uffering of the Algerian people during the ten years of killing, displacement and bloodshed. This was epresented by a number of Algerian writers and novelists, such as “Al-Taher Wattar”, “Wasini Al-Araj” and “Bashir Mufti”, The latter, who portrayed the tragic reality through his novel "The Ceremonies and Funerals", also portrayed the role of the intellectual in addressing the issues he was facing, and its manifestations among an opposition intellectual who rejected the prevailing situation and tried to change it. A neutral intellectual who chose neutrality and silence as a result of the regime’s siege and threat to him, and an isolated intellectual who secluded himself from his society and chose an altercation. What urges with himself in his isolation, and the pursuit behind that to combine the historical stage experienced by Algeria at that time and the literary magination in depicting reality and drawing its events and scenes
