Abstract: | This study was conducted to investigate the presence of Salmonella in poultry meat products (minced chicken and offal) sold in the Mila region, and to assess the antibiotic resistance profile of the isolated strains. A total of 60 samples were collected from 15 retail points and analyzed using standard microbiological methods. The results revealed an overall contamination rate of 8.33%, with five positive samples: three from minced chicken (10%) and two from offal (6.67%). Antibiotic susceptibility testing revealed concerning resistance profiles, particularly to ampicillin (80%), tetracycline (60%), imipenem (100%), nalidixic acid (80%), and levofloxacin (80%). These results highlight the presence of multidrug-resistant strains, posing a potential public health risk. In response to this issue, the antibacterial activity of thyme essential oil was evaluated. It showed strong effectiveness against all isolated strains, with significant inhibition zones. This study highlights the need to strengthen hygiene practices throughout the meat distribution chain, to rationalize antibiotic use in livestock, and to consider natural alternatives such as thyme essential oil as part of an integrated approach to control resistant pathogenic agents. |
