Abstract

This dissertation, titled "The Semiotics of Metaphor in Sufi Poetry – A Case Study of Ibn al-Sabbagh al-udhamī's Diwan", addresses the issue of the relationship between metaphorical structure in Sufi discourse and the semiotic meaning underlying it. This is explored through a semantic and aesthetic reading of the Diwan of a relatively obscure Andalusian poet, Ibn al-Sabbagh al-Judhamī, whose poetic experience is marked by the dense use of metaphors employed to serve spiritual and emotional meanings.The study is based on the hypothesis that metaphor in Sufi poetry does not merely serve a thetorical function, but also carries a profound symbolic dimension that contributes to shaping the semantic structure of Sufi discourse. Moreover, it reflects psychological and spiritual aspects inherent to the very nature of the Sufi experience. This research adopts a semiotic approach to textual analysis, in addition to rhetorical tools that allow for the deconstruction of metaphorical imagery and the identification of its patterns and functions. The study concludes that Ibn al-Sabbagh's poetry is rich in complex metaphorical images that embody the stages of Sufi taste (mystical states), making language a tool of revelation and intimate expression. His use of metaphor serves as a form of symbolic presence, in which words harmonize with meanings to reveal the vision of a mystic poet who articulated his experience in a language dense with suggestion and intensity
