Description: | Medicinal plants constitute an inexhaustible and diversified source of secondary metabolites, which have several applications: pharmaceutical, medical, food, agronomic and biotechnological. These metabolites are at the origin of several biological activities such as antibacterial and antioxidant activity. It is with this in mind that we were interested in two medicinal plants (Rosmarinus officinalis L. and Olea europaea L.) which belong respectively to the Lamiaceae and Oleaceae families. The objective of our work is based on the qualitative analysis of phytochemical compounds, as well as the evaluation of the antioxidant and antibacterial activities of these two plants. The results obtained showed the existence of different families of chemical compounds of secondary metabolism in the two species studied. The antioxidant activity was tested by the method of measuring the scavenging capacity of the free radical DPPH, and carried out with the methanolic extracts of the two plants. The results show that the methanolic extract of Rosmarinus officinalis L. clearly presents high antioxidant activity with an IC50 of 1.36 mg/ml in comparison with Olea europaea L. which recorded an IC50 of 3.4 mg/ml. The antibacterial activity was tested on four strains “Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa” by the disk diffusion method on agar medium. The results showed that the ethanolic extract of Rosmarinus officinalis L. has significant antibacterial activity against strains of Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis with inhibition zones of (12.32mm) and (10.86mm) respectively. While the aqueous and methanolic extract showed negative effects. In addition, the aqueous extract of Olea europaea L. shows an inhibition effect against Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli with inhibition diameters of (8.65mm) and (8.57mm) respectively, and no inhibition effect against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. |
