Abstract: Phonetics is the study of linguistic sounds in terms of their articulation, characteristics, and production. It is also referred to as the science of sound or phonetics. Phoneticians study the articulation of sounds, which involves determining the specific area in the vocal tract where each sound is produced. They also classify sounds based on their articulation. Additionally, they describe sounds based on observing how air friction occurs in the muscles of the vocal tract. For example, a sound may be classified as voiced, voiceless, aspirated, or tense, among others. In our research, we have examined and compared the efforts of Arabic and Western honeticians (such as Al-Khalil ibn Ahmad al-Farahidi and André Martinet) in the field of phonetics, and we have discovered similarities and differences between their approaches.
