Abstract: The present study investigates the students ' use of code variation. Its aims are identifying to what extent first year students use code variation. It also sheds light on the main codes that are used by students. Moreover, it attempts to know the main reasons that lead them to switch and mix between different languages. To achieve those motives, first year English students at Mila university center are selected as a population for this study, and a sample of twenty 20 students participate in this research work. The interview is used as a tool for data collection, where records are relied on for data analysis. Data obtained from the interviews show that all students switch and mix between several languages differently, according to various circumstances and situations. At the end, the findings of this study reveal that first-year students use code variation because they are familiar with more than two codes. Accordingly, the hypotheses came to be validated.
