The banking system is a fundamental pillar of any national economy, serving as the main intermediary in mobilizing financial resources and channelling them toward productive sectors. This study aims to assess the reality of the Algerian banking sector by evaluating the capacity of public and private banks to mobilize savings, exploring key phases of development and reforms in the banking system, and analysing the impact of conomic and financial crises on its performance. This study employed adescriptive-analytical method. The findings reveal that the Algerian banking system suffers from structural and functional imbalances that hinder its efficiency in mobilizing financial resources and directing them toward productive investment and has failed to enhance the competitiveness and performance of the banking sector. Furthermore, the system remains heavily reliant on public resources, with limited diversification of funding sources.en_US
