Abstract: | Cardiovascular diseases are responsible for many health problems worldwide. Indeed, these diseases constitute a set of disorders that affect the heart and blood circulation, including hypertension. The main objective of this work is to contribute to the knowledge of plants used in the treatment of hypertension in the Mila province located in north-eastern Algeria. This work was carried out in 16 municipalities within the state ‘s territory, which are as follow:( Mila, Ahmed Rachedi, Chelghoum Laïd, Tadjnanet, Tiberguent, Ferdjioua, Oued endja, Ain Beida Harriche, Zegayia, Sidi Mérouane, Grarem Gouga, Raouached, Tarrai bainen, Amira Arrés, Bouhatem, Yahia beni-geucha). This research used a questionnaire as a data collection tool, administered to a total sample of 480 individuals in the Mila province of Algeria, divided into four categories (general public, hypertensive patients, herbalists and pharmacists). The study revealed several key findings based on the analysis and interpretation of the collected data, including the identification of 35 different medicinal plant species belonging to nineteen (19) distinct families used in the treatment of hypertension. The most frequently used plants were: Garlic (184 citations), Guinea sorrel (80) , Parsley (61), Basil (51) , Olive tree (38) , Coriander (34), White wormwood (30), Rosemary (28), Green mint (25), Bay laurel (20) . Among these, the Lamiaceae family was the most cited by respondents, with 6 species, followed by the Apiaceae, Oleaceae, and Zingiberaceae families, each with 3 species. Furthermore, this study significantly helped to identify the most commonly used methods for employing these plants, the most used parts, and the consumption protocol adopted. This research ultimately presented several perspectives, notably the adoption of plant-based treatments subjected to scientific standards, using widely available medicinal plants, with clear steps and processes, as more appropriate therapeutic alternatives for patients in terms of financial, energetic, and health conditions. |
