Abstract

This study falls within the field of text linguistics, focusing on the role of coherence and cohesion in the construction of the text. It moves from the sentence-level criterion to considering the text as a larger, unified structure, emphasizing the mechanisms that make it cohesive and coherent. The concepts of coherence and cohesion are addressed as the most essential standards of textuality: the former ensures semantic and intellectual consistency among the text’s components, while the latter guarantees clear linguistic connectivity. These concepts were applied to the book The Prophet, where the analysis revealed the presence of both linguistic and semantic mechanisms that contributed to the text’s cohesion and coherence. The study concluded that a text does not derive its aesthetic and semantic value from scattered vocabulary, but rather from its internal organization. Coherence forms the semantic depth of the text, while cohesion creates the linguistic threads that bind it together. This duality was clearly manifested in Gibran’s The Prophet, which presented a fully integrated textual experience where language and thought are interwoven into a tightly structured fabric, granting the text its strength and beauty
