Abstract

The challenge of this research revolves around the evaluation of the faithfulness of the translation of literary extracts, containing figures of speech, from Arabic to the French language and to evaluate the quality of its result. In order to achieve our object, we divided our research work into two parts; the theoretical part in which we approached in the first chapter the definitions of figures of speech in Arabic and in French by establishing a comparison between the two. Then, the second chapter, we started it by giving an idea on some concepts having a relation with our research in general. The practical part, we devoted it for the presentation of the corpus including the biography of the poet of Diwan: Tarafa Ibn Al-Abd Al-Bakri as well as his translator: Max Seligsohn. In addition, we have shown the work approach on which we rely to carry out this research. After that, we moved on to the analysis of the translation of the figures of speech of this Diwan in parallel with the original text of the poet, indicating the technique of translation, which were often depicted in literal translation, transposition, and other less-used techniques. And the types of loss committed by the translator, which was often represented in linguistic, semantic and cultural losses. Finally, we closed this research with a general conclusion in which we answered the problem declared at the beginning of our investigation and the questions posed in the general introduction
