Abstract

This study aims to examine the grammatical preferences of Muḥyī al-Dīn through his commentary on Ibn ʿAqīl’s explanation of Alfiyyah. It was found that his method of preference is based on scientific principles rooted in the fundamentals of grammatical reasoning, such as transmission (al-samāʿ), analogy (al-qiyās), presumption of continuity (al-istishḥāb), and consensus (al-ijmāʿ), steering clear of subjective tendencies and partisanship without evidence. As for the nature of his choices, they were neither eccentric nor novel but rather a ontinuation of what was established by the early grammarians of Basra and Kufa, with a clear inclination towards the Basran school in most issues. This orientation reflects a commitment to scholarly rigor and objectivity in addressing grammatical matters.
